You should check out the Nasopure system at nasopure.com. It is a soft flexible bottle that is extremely easy to clean. You can buy the salt refills from the website also. They are premeasured and tell you exactly how much to use for isotonic or hypertonic. I use this sytem for asthma and allergies. My 5 year old son now uses it after two sinus surgeries. It is the easiest of the sinus wash systems we have tried.

I second the Nasopure system! I have used it for years and I couldn't have survived the sinus headaches I suffered during my recent pregnancy! It is so easy to use!
He must sell the packages filled at the pharmacy or wherever you bought the Neti Pot. This is a special mixture of saline, which is the chemistry of the same place, I would not recommend trying to make the mixture itself, and certainly not put baking powder on his nose. Simply insert the saline solution does not cause pain and irritation ... perhaps worse, depending on what you put up there.
